Awareness in supporting & empowering young carers."when you take care of others all the time, it gets hard to put your own needs first"

There are more than 110,000 carers supporting someone they know with illness or disability who could not otherwise manage in Hertfordshire.

It is estimated that there are at least around 4,000 young carers in Hertfordshire – 10% of children attending the county’s state-funded secondary schools

It’s highly likely that someone you know or work with is a carer. Each day 6,000 people take on a caring responsibility and three in five of us will become carers at some point in our lives. This unpaid work saves the NHS billions of pounds a year but at what cost to the carer?

According to research carried out by The Carers Trust, which spearheads Young Carers Awareness Day, 53% of young carers they surveyed had problems coping with school work. They also found people aged 16 to 18 in a caring role are twice as unlikely to be in education, employment or training.

If you know someone in Hertfordshire under 19 that helps care for someone elderly, ill, disabled or is affected by a person’s drug or alcohol use, then Carers in Herts can support them

Help get an understanding of the Young Carers across Hertfordshire, this course will be delivered through Carers in Herts and main topics discussed will be:

  • Understand who young carers are
  • Understand what young carers do, and the impact it can have
  • How to identify and support young carers in your setting
